Sept 14 - FDR at Red Hook

If you weren’t at Red Hook High School on Tuesday night, you missed a classic five-set volleyball match between two unbeaten teams, which Red Hook narrowly survived with the victory.

However, I didn’t have the space to properly give the Presidents their due. This was a scrappy, impressive performance by a very young Roosevelt team — only one senior played, and that was sparingly — which started a freshman and a sophomore. From my own perspective, when balancing her age and her skills, that freshman — Shannon Kelly — often looked like the most promising player on the floor. Her six straight service points in the first game helped Roosevelt build their advantage.

I’m excited, I have all underclassmen,” said Roosevelt coach Cheryl Wilson, who celebrated a birthday on Tuesday. “There’s a whole big season ahead of me. To play this team — a good team – this close, this early in the season, I have high hopes for the rest of the season.”

Roosevelt was 3-0 in official matches entering the match, and hadn’t dropped a game yet this year. It also placed second in the “White Lightning” division at the Hendrick Hudson volleyball tournament on Saturday.

Even after giving up the third game and their chance at a sweep, the Presidents looked poised to start the fourth game, jumping to a 4-0 lead. Later in the game, trailing 20-15, Roosevelt stormed back with a 6-0 spurt. There was very little quit in them, despite giving up that two-game lead.

“Maybe the third game we were a little more over-confident after taking two wins, and then a lack of confidence for the last two,” Wilson said. “Although, you can see by the score, I don’t think we ever gave up.”

Sept 2 - New Paltz at FDR

It would have been hard for the volleyball team from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School to have started the new season any better.

The Presidents beat the visiting Huguenots from New Paltz, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23, in Thursday's season-opening Mid-Hudson Athletic League match at Hyde Park.

"We started off really strong, but the weather took a beating on both teams," said Roosevelt coach Cheryl Wilson, who said conditions inside the Presidents' gym became humid and stuffy early in the match, causing sluggish play at points. "I was happy with the way we started, and hopefully we'll keep moving ahead."

Rebecca Hieter paced the victors with 19 assists, two kills and an ace. Roosevelt also got seven kills and an assist from Venika Jarvis.

Kristen Cole contributed seven kills and three aces for Roosevelt, which also received six kills and an assist from Zenobia Smith.

The Presidents travel to Marlboro on Tuesday.
