Boys soccer: Roosevelt ousted on overtime goal
Mike Benischek • Poughkeepsie Journal • November 2, 2010
Giving up two goals in just over 12 minutes, including a golden goal in overtime, the host No. 2 Franklin D. Roosevelt High School boys soccer team fell short to No. 6 Washingtonville, 2-1, in the Section 9 Class AA semifinals on Monday. One minute, 53 seconds into the first overtime period, Washingtonville's Shane McLoughlin received a corner kick from John LaTouche in the box and beat Roosevelt goalie Mike Bojko for the game winner.
After a scoreless first half, Yury Wajda took a Matt Koziol pass at the top of the 18 and fired a shot with his left foot past Conor Moloney in Washingtonville's goal.
Early in the second half, a scrum broke out on the field, resulting in two players — Roosevelt's Tim Sternberg and Washingtonville's Brandon Trautmann — receiving red cards.
"From my perspective, Tim went in solely to break the fight up," said Roosevelt coach Dan Cowan. "He grabbed at my player first, trying to break it up. ... Before I knew it, there were seven or eight players in the middle.
"The game basically became a battle of trying to attack without leaving yourself vulnerable on defense. The (number of) shots went down and it became more of a midfield battle."
Only 11 shots were taken in the contest, with seven for Washingtonville.
Cowan said Washingtonville, trailing, 1-0, was the first to become aggressive offensively. With 10 minutes left in regulation, the Wizards tied the game with McLoughlin's first goal, also assisted by LaTouche.
Roosevelt, which was without senior captain/midfielder Pat Noonan, who was out with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, ends the season at 12-3-1.
"We had a great season. I'm proud of the way the guys played," Cowan said. "I really enjoyed coaching the team this year."
