Boys soccer: FDR win divisional crown

Since 2008, the boys soccer team from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School has watched the Rondout Valley Ganders capture the Mid-Hudson Athletic League Division 1 title.

"We finished the past two seasons very disappointed," Roosevelt coach Dan Cowan said. "We felt we could have won the division the last two years.

"We had the opportunity to take it this year, and we capitalized on that opportunity."

Indeed, on the strength of Pat Noonan's first-half goal, Hyde Park's Presidents beat the Ganders on Friday, 1-0, to win the division.

"They were so excited," Cowan said, "but it was so cold. We couldn't really enjoy it until we got back into the (school) building."

After Sean Gabel sent a crossing pass to Noonan right at the 18-yard line, Noonan beat a defender and blasted a shot from the left side, watching the ball enter the right side of the net.

Goaltender Mike Bojko and the Roosevelt defense took over from there.

Roosevelt had a big advantage in shots on goal, firing 22 compared to the Ganders' four.

Rondout Valley will host a rematch on Monday, before the Presidents (11-2 overall, 8-1 league, 5-0 division) head to the MHAL tournament semifinals a week from today.

"They're not satisfied with that," said Cowan, referring to Friday's achievement. "They're hungry for more."
