Manhunt over; Homicide suspect in custody

ELLENVILLE — Police have arrested the man wanted for allegedly killing a 61-year-old security guard at a drug treatment facility in the Town of Wawarsing.

Richard N. Giga, 25, was found at about 6:30 p.m. hiding at an unoccupied residence off of Cape Road, according to an Ulster County Sheriff's Office press release.

Police said Giga allegedly stabbed the guard, Leland Wood, of Napanoch, around 3:08 a.m. today at the Renaissance Project, a 100-bed in-patient drug rehabilitation facility on Ulster Heights Road, about two miles from the Village of Ellenville.

Giga then took physical control of a 35-year-old nurse and forced her to drive him from the scene, said Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Frank Faluotico Jr.

In the car, Giga stabbed the nurse several times in the abdomen and chest, causing her to crash and roll over, police said. A passerby took her to Ellenville Hospital. She was flown to Saint Francis Hospital in the Town of Poughkeepsie, where she was taken into surgery and was last listed in stable condition.

Following the crash, Giga fled into the woods, just outside the Village of Ellenville, police said.

The Sheriff's Office release did not specify what charges were filed against Giga.

Ellenville schools were closed for the day on the advice of local police, said District Superintendent Lisa Wiles.

Wiles said a two-hour delay for Ellenville schools was called at 6:15 a.m. today and school was canceled at 8 a.m.

“We’ve been in touch with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the Ellenville Police Department all morning,” said Wiles. “Based on the reports they were giving us, and the recommendations they had, we closed school.”

“There’s a major manhunt going on here,” she said this morning. “There are roadblocks on Route 209 and 52, going south and north and east and west. There’s a helicopter flying around.”

Anyone with information on the incident should call police at 845-338-3640.

Giga was charged with multiple felonies in 2008 after police said he attacked two teens and a 20-year-old while screaming racial slurs at them on South Little Tor Road in New City.
