Hello everyone! Welcome to a new school year! Since this school year is going to look different than previous years, we thought it would be beneficial to provide additional information and resources regarding social/emotional well-being. To kick off the school year we wanted to bring some things to your attention. First, September is Self–Care Awareness Month. Self-Care Awareness Month is a time to remind us that taking care of ourselves, first and foremost, is essential. True self-care is not self-centered or selfish; it is simply keeping yourself the focus of your own life. Use the month of September to make self-care a part of your daily routine . It can be as simple as a conscious breath in the morning, taking a walk outside, or googling self-care activities to find what works best for you. The kindness we show towards ourselves will manifest into a kinder world.

Second, September is also National Suicide Prevention Month. This is a time for all of us to unite to promote suicide prevention awareness, share resources and stories, remember those affected by suicide, and focus on getting treatment to those who need it most. Some of the most at risk populations include LGBTQ+ youth, and Black youth. Understanding and knowing the most at risk groups, warning signs, and risk factors is an important way to take part in suicide prevention, help others in crisis, and change the conversation around suicide. Listed below are some resources to help support these measures:

    • BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) Tool Kits and Resources
    • Healing in Action: A Toolkit for Black Lives Matter Healing Justice & Direct Action
    • Ring the Alarm: The Crisis of Black Youth Suicide in America
    • Supporting Black LGBTQ+ Youth
    • Risk of Suicide
    • Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth During Troubling Times (PDF)

In addition, The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  1-800-273-8255
